Johnny Davenport was inducted into the THPA Hall of Fame in 2003 becoming the 28th Member to be inducted.
Johnny moved to Texas and joined the THPA in 1984, immediately becoming involved within the organization. He proved to be The Godfather of West Texas Horseshoe as he helped organize, design, and build clubs and courts in Borger, Dumas, Lubbock, and Snyder. Johnny even served as President and Tournament Director for three of these clubs at the same time!
In 1994 Johnny was appointed by the THPA Executive Council to serve as Assistant Regional Director, a position he held for about 15 years. Johnny also previously served as THPA 2nd Vice President, Chairman to the Advisory/Rules Committee, and THPA Historian. As Historian Johnny worked closely with original web master Robert Smith to get the THPA’s first website in order.
One of Johnny’s greatest contributions to the game of horseshoes was his creation of the “Mr. D” horseshoe. With its unique concave shape and weights specifically designed for the flip pitcher, Johnny’s new shoe quickly became one of the most popular shoes in the country during the early 2000’s.
Johnny’s skill, expertise, leadership, and willingness to help and work hard increased the numbers of those interested in horseshoes. All of this has earned him a well deserved place in the Hall of Fame
